Salary Range: Entry rate is approx. $31.38/hr with an average annual salary of $65,270.

New Hires Garden City, KS are eligible for a $10000 hiring incentive – payable over ten (10) months in two equal installments of $5000 available for candidates who meet all qualifications below:

  • Offered a position and successfully complete the pre-employment process
  • Successful completion of the first four months of new-hire training and service to be eligible for the first $5000 installment
  • Complete 6 additional months of active service at the hired location to be eligible for the second $5000 installment.
  • Willing to commit to stay at the location on which you were hired for a period of 3 years. Leaving the location or job for any reason (including relocation of more than 50 miles from the headquartered location) will result in 100% repayment and forfeiture of future payments.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is responsible for track maintenance (constructing, inspecting, and repairing track); constructing, inspecting, and repairing other railroad property and facilities; and equipment operation and maintenance.

TRACK MAINTENANCE

Lift and carry track material

Assist in track maintenance

TRUCK MAINTENANCE

Schedule regular service for welding trucks

Ensure trucks and equipment are in good repair

Submit necessary paperwork for truck and welding equipment repairs

WELDER

Weld, grind, and cut rail

Operate welding truck safely and efficiently

Maintain daily records and time sheets

WORKING CONDITIONS

Extreme all-weather conditions

SHIFTS/HOURS

Full-time (40 hrs/wk)

Subject to on-call, overtime, nights, alternating shifts, weekends, and holidays

TRAVEL

Travel to and remain on job sites around designated seniority region, sometimes for extended periods of time, sometimes week at a time

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

21 years of age or older

Ability to report for duty at the designated work location

Able to work safely in the above working conditions

Able to work the above shift/hours

Able to meet the above travel requirements

Able to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English

Able to lift and carry up to 60 lbs occasionally

Possess a valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with test endorsements for combination vehicle, air brake, and HAZMAT or am able to obtain one within 60 days of employment

Able to visually distinguish colors – red, blue, green, yellow, and lunar (clear light)

Ability to discriminate and differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) in the work environment.

One-year minimum of verifiable training and/or welding experience

Able to use hands and hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling

Occasionally climb on/off equipment

Able to bend, walk, stand and sit for extended time

Follow safety policies and procedures; wear required personal protective equipment

TRAINING

Company-paid on-the-job training, including preparation, equipment and expenses to obtain CDL

COVID-19 Federal Vaccine Mandate

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect all aspects of our lives. From the onset, BNSF’s goals have remained the same: keep our people safe and maintain our essential operations. Under President Biden’s COVID-19 Action Plan, BNSF is covered by the federal mandate requiring vaccination. Effective December 8, 2021, BNSF has paused its implementation of the COVID-19 vaccine mandate given the dynamic legal proceedings. The ultimate outcome of the federal contractor vaccine mandate is yet to be determined. It is still possible that the mandate, as it applies to BNSF, could be upheld in court in the near future.
