Job Description

The Artificial Intelligence, Learning, and Intelligent Systems Group within NREL’s Computational Science Center has an opening for a Graduate Student Researcher to participate in an interdisciplinary research project in data analysis with an emphasis in deep learning and the energy efficiency optimization of high-performance computing resources.

The researcher’s work schedule may be flexible to accommodate academic workloads (e.g., full-time in the summer, and part-time during the academic year). If academic work is compatible with this research effort, some degree of synergistic overlap may be possible. Work may be done remotely, in-person, or both.

The graduate researcher will be a full team member, working closely with other researchers to publish impactful research. The successful candidate will work with a research team to conduct and analyze empirical deep learning experiments; to analyze the results to identify governing relationships between the neural architecture, hyperparameters, and the hardware architecture and how these choices impact the energy consumption of model training; to apply these findings to construct efficient neural architecture optimization; and to co-author the publication of our results.

Responsibilities include:

  • Participating in empirical and theoretical analysis of the performance and energy consumption of machine learning and other algorithms
  • Assisting in experimental design and execution
  • Collaboratively developing and evaluating energy-efficient machine learning approaches
  • Engaging in collaborative development of journal and conference manuscripts, technical papers, and project reports
  • Growing as a researcher, software developer, and data analyst

Basic Qualifications Must be enrolled as a full-time student in a Bachelor’s, Master’s or PhD degree program, or graduated in the past 12 months from an accredited institution. Internship period cannot exceed 12 months past graduation. Minimum of a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week) Job Profile: Graduate I / Annual Salary Range: $40,500 – $64,800

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, as well as the position’s work location, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.

Benefits Summary Benefits include medical, dental, and vision insurance; 403(b) Employee Savings Plan with employer match*; and sick leave (where required by law). NREL employees may be eligible for, but are not guaranteed, performance-, merit-, and achievement- based awards that include a monetary component. Some positions may be eligible for relocation expense reimbursement. Internships projected to be less than 20 hours per week are not eligible for medical, dental, or vision benefits.
