Job Summary
The Paralegal III provides supports on all aspects legal matters handled by the unit, which may include support on all phases of litigation (including pre-litigation and arbitrations) or transactional support (including support on contractual documents and agreements) within the lines of responsibilities and under some supervision by assigned attorney or unit leader. The paralegal conducts complex research and analysis of law, regulatory requirements and internal policies, with minimal supervision develops plan for and investigates facts, anticipates, plans conducts and coordinates document collections, manages organization of records, prepares and maintains legal documents for review, approval, and use. In carrying out these duties, the Paralegal III will communicate with various intra-company departments and external parties (including outside counsel), prepare business correspondence and reports, and assist with the organization and maintenance of organization documents and department files, with minimal supervision. The Paralegal III will be supervised by attorneys on legal matters, and will be required to utilize independent judgment and make recommendations to legal staff on a variety of matters. Paralegal III will be responsible for updating, developing and improving departmental processes, SOPs, desktops, without promoting.
Duties
Research, monitor, update, and maintain current knowledge of developments in federal and state legislation, rules, regulations, and industry guidelines. Organize, maintain, and update departmental files, and develop processes around same and records management. Prepare legal documents for review, approval, and use by attorneys, as requested or assigned. Analyze data and write reports, as requested.
With some supervision, coordinate the trainings offered by the department. Anticipate, propose and develop processes, guidelines and SOPs for the assigned attorney, unit or department. Provide administrative assistance as needed ranging from taking messages to drafting letters, scheduling meetings, typing and projects as requested. Perform factual investigation and research. Perform other duties as assigned.
Education Required
Bachelor’s DegreeIn lieu of degree, equivalent education and/or experience may be considered.

Required:
At least 2-3 years of paralegal experience in a fast-paced complex office setting, working with multiple priorities under deadline pressures.
At least 2-3 years experience in law firm, corporate legal or government (including public agency) legal department. Experience in highly regulated industry. Preferred:
At least 2-3 years of paralegal experience in corporate, law firm, government (public agency) or health plan setting handling complex assignments relating to regulatory, public law or health care issues; independent litigation support on cases relating to civil litigation, employment, healthcare and/or provider disputes.
Skills
Required:
Must be strongly proficient in the use of personal computers, laptops and supporting software in a Windows based environment.
Should be knowledgeable in the use of legal research software, including Westlaw and/or LexisNexis. Ability to work as part of a team and is highly collaborative.
Self-starter with multi-tasking abilities. Ability to be proactive and accountable.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Excellent communication and writing skills. Preferred:
Working knowledge of California Managed Care environment preferred. Prior experience, working knowledge of public agencies regulatory requirements (e.g., Brown Act, California Public Records Act, Form 700s, conflicts laws.) Working knowledge of California employment laws. Working knowledge and prior experience with vendor and other contracts.

General Legal Services:
The position reports to Associate General Counsel or managing attorney of General Legal Services Unit. Under some supervision of assigned attorney or the managing attorney for the unit, this position is responsible for handling, assisting with and performing job responsibilities on assigned matters within the responsibilities of General Legal Service, including compliance with public agency laws, Forms 700, conflict of interest laws, labor and employment, vendor contracting and procurement, work place investigations, records requests and subpoenas, trainings, government claims, threatened and activate litigations. Health Care Legal Services:
Position reports to General Counsel or managing attorney for Health Care Legal Services Unit. Under some supervision of assigned attorney or managing attorney for the unit, this position is responsible for handling, assisting and providing support on assigned legal matters within the responsibility of the unit. This includes preparing and maintain documentation pertinent to L.A. Care’s Managed Care licensure; ensure timely preparation and submission of all documents required to maintain such licensure. Responsibilities also include under supervision of department attorneys Prepare review proofread, compile, and summarize a variety of legal correspondence involving regulatory filings and matters related to the normal functioning of the department or other ongoing administration of existing cases or orders.
