Job description

[PhD Student – Advanced Wood Materials & Processing] Climate change and protection of the environment are two of the greatest global challenges of the 21st century. Wood is playing an increasing role in Ireland’s and Europe’s environment, society, and economy. This PhD position will be based in the TCD School of Chemistry [Prof. MA Morris] and the AMBER research centre. The role will involve close collaboration with other TCD research groups, and may involve other academic/industry collaborators. We seek a motivated candidate with a BSc or MSc in Chemistry/Wood Science or Materials. The candidate will research and develop new chemistries from wood. Specifically, resins, coatings, and adhesives for wood products will be researched, with a view to enhanced durability and environmental resistance, and regulatory compliance.

Standard Duties and Responsibilities of the Post

Research and development of new polymer blends/chemistries from wood. Materials testing, measurement, and optimisation. Collaboration with other team and project members.

Funded under the NXTGENWOOD research consortium, by the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food & Marine, DAFM grant, 2019PROG704.

Person Specification

We require a motived researcher, interested in the research and development of sustainable and bio-friendly materials. Excellent collaboration, teamwork and communication skills are required.

Qualifications

A 2.1 degree or master’s degree in Chemistry/Wood Science or Advanced Materials is preferred.

Knowledge & Experience (Essential & Desirable)

Knowledge of Chemistry/polymers/coatings and materials is essential. Hands on lab-based research experience is essential. Knowledge of Wood Science/Forestry is welcomed. International research experience via a placement/secondment/other is welcomed.

Skills & Competencies

Skills required include wet chemistry/bench-top chemistry; materials testing and Materials Science. Skills in materials testing [some or all of spectroscopy/microscopy/electron microscopy]. Competent in technical writing/scientific communication.
