Job description: The Superintendent is a key to productivity and thus profitability. He or she must be a leader and have high levels of energy and initiative and be able to deal with a variety of personalities. The Superintendent must be a problem solver who can effectively communicate solutions to foremen and tradespeople.

The Superintendent will be responsible for:

  • Plan and supervise field staff, including determining logistics plan, manpower levels, material quantities, equipment, temporary power sources, work schedule and documenting actual hours worked.
  • Coordinate assigned work with work of different crafts, or other contractors. Manage and ensure all subcontractors follow the project schedule.
  • Along with Project Manager, maintain liaison with designers, subcontractors, estimators and tradespeople to ensure that work complies with drawings, specifications and schedule.
  • Resolve problems involving coordination and productivity, etc. as required.
  • Be responsible for safety: monitor field personnel compliance with project safety program requirements; document and ensure that prevention and corrective measures are implemented. Perform documented safety inspections no less than weekly.
  • Maintain contact with other parties and organizations to ensure that all required materials, equipment, inspections, etc. support craft activities and project schedule.
  • Complete daily reports describing activities completed, critical conversations and issues, weather conditions, etc. Enter reports into project management software being utilized on site.
  • Understand and manage the project critical path and all milestones.
  • Actively participate and lead where appropriate weekly team, subcontractor, pre-construction and owner meetings.
  • Review monthly with the Project Manager the PM Report including budget and labor productions.
  • Read, manage and hold accountable subcontractors to the subcontract agreement. Maintain a proactive approach.
  • In conjunction with the Project Manager, develop and implement a complete project schedule and update no less than monthly.
  • Review original project estimate and develop means and methods to meet or exceed target material and labor cost.
  • Review monthly cost reports with the Project Manager.
  • Review external and internal equipment billings no less than monthly.
  • Submit monthly manpower projections and coordinate manpower needs with the General Superintendent or Regional Operations Manager(s).
  • Submit, or ensure submittal of weekly time and quantities on self-perform work.
  • Monitor overall project quality. Ensure all inspections, and pre-pour checklists are performed.
  • May need to work in a dual role as a craft foreman or work with their tools when requested depending on Company workload, project size, and other job requirements.
  • Perform additional assignments as directed by the Project Manager.

The Superintendent will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering or relevant field
  • Minimum of 8+ construction experience in construction
  • Understanding of construction scheduling and cost control and possessing the ability to control and supervise multiple disciplines are essential
  • Previous experience with General Contractors or Construction Management firms
  • Thorough knowledge of construction, finance, and management practice
  • Technological proficiency
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced dynamic environment
  • Understanding of the financials of a construction project
  • Leadership experience
